Mind vs. Machine - a new graphic novel, coming September 8!
The hopes of humanity rest on the shoulders of one chess player in this true graphic novel about the epic chess match between a human and a super computer, by bestselling author Steve Sheinkin, Chess Grandmaster Maurice Ashley, and award-winning comics artist Thien Pham.
It’s May 1997 in Manhattan, New York. World champion Garry Kasparov is about to begin a six-game match against Deep Blue, the cutting-edge super computer developed by a team of visionaries at IBM. No machine has ever defeated a chess champion in a multi-game match.
If it happens, it will be a major turning point in human history. It will be, as Newsweek declares on its cover, “the Brain’s Last Stand.”
Will the human mind prevail? Or is this checkmate for humankind?
"Utterly engrossing. I could not put this book down." ―Gene Luen Yang, New York Times-bestselling and National Book Award Finalist author of American Born Chinese
"In Maurice Ashley and Steve Sheinkin’s thrilling graphic novel, the battle of Garry Kasparov against the supercomputer Deep Blue is brought to life with incredible energy. As someone who has lived the ferocity of competitive chess, I found this account of 'the match that changed the world' to be an essential look at the start of the Industrial Revolution for the mind.
It captures the exact moment when the dream of building a machine that could 'think' like a human—or perhaps better than one—became a frightening reality. A brilliant and inspiring read for anyone curious about the essence of intelligence and the future of human pride." —Judit Polgár, chess grandmaster

My new book is a Wild West true crime thriller - definitely one of the strangest and most exciting true stories I've come across in a lifetime of research. The story is told with a mix of narrative and comics - with amazing art by Jon Chad.
"Steve Sheinkin is more than an author—he’s a time traveler whose deep research and fabulous writing whisk readers on thrilling rides through history. Kids will be transfixed by this unbelievable-but-true story of Gilded Age diamond hunters, swindlers, and train robbers. It is one of my absolute favorites!"
—Lauren Tarshis, bestselling author of the I SURVIVED series

★ "Jon Chad adds an unusual visual element to Sheinkin’s rip-roaring account of the brief but intense national furor sparked by the reported discovery of a supposed diamond field in 1870. . . A breathless, dramatic tale tidily wrapped up with a set of capsule biographies."
- Booklist, starred review
★ "A rollicking caper that offers historical hijinks and freewheeling fun in spades."
- Publishers Weekly, starred review
★ "A compelling story of bold lies, pervasive deal-making, and surprising gullibility. Reading like a crime novel, readers will eagerly turn the pages looking for answers. . . VERDICT A must-purchase for collections where true crime and nearly unbelievable historical tales are popular."

The TRUE STORY section
Here's where I've spend most of the past 20 years, work wise. My goal has always been to create nonfiction that's as fast paced and page-turning as any novel. The version of Bomb with the blue cover is a graphic novel - an adaptation of my narrative nonfiction book, with amazing comics by Nick Bertozzi.
Teacher's Guides for lots of my titles are available here!

Stuff they never let me put in textbooks!
These are my first three nonfiction books, written while I was making my escape from the textbook world. Basically, I tell the story of the American Revolution, the Civil War, and America's westward expansion, packing in all the true stories editors would never allow into boring textbooks.
My chapter book series: TIME TWISTERS!
Okay, these are clearly not nonfiction. They're comedy adventure stories, starring real people from history - but not quite doing the stuff the textbooks say they're supposed to!
RABBI HARVEY graphic novels
These are the adventures of a rabbi in the Wild West, based on classic Jewish wisdom and folktales. The first Harvey book, The Adventures of Rabbi Harvey, was the first book of mine to be published!
