Walking and Talking with John Corey Whaley

One of the best things about my job is that I get to meet a lot of great children’s and YA authors at events all over the country. So I figured it might be fun to interview some of them, and turn the interviews into short online comics. Kind of a strange idea, I know, but I’ve always loved drawing comics and figured this might be a way keep to my hand in. Consider it an experiment, a work in progress…

Someone had to be first, so I owe a special thanks to the award-winning YA novelist John Corey Whaley for agreeing to give this a try with me. We met at an NYC coffee shop and strolled the streets of Manhattan talking about his new book, Noggin, and the “happy accident,” as he calls it, that led him into the world of young adult literature. Corey1I got lots of great material and used just a bit of it for my first two-page comic.

I’m excited to announce that it’s online this morning on Elizabeth Bird’s amazing A Fuse #8 Production blog! Please check it out and let me know what you think. I’m planning to draw another two-pager with Corey’s thoughts on craft, and the origin of the Noggin idea. And after that… who knows?
